I agree with Jackie. Long term deals lock you in. You want to have the freedom to renegotiate if your traffic and PR increases.

Also, being proactive and mentioning companies in your posts will definitely help them notice you – Marketing teams get notified every time their company's name is mentioned on the internet (Google Alerts).

But yeah, first priority is building a dedicated readership generally interested in the subject (doesn't have to be large).

– So I guess you have to market your BLOG to the companies. In order to do so:

1. Know which companies you want ads of on your website

2. Know how your readership fits with their target market

After about six months of accepting ads and not tracking, I decided to track by excel sheet (and went back six months to update it). Otherwise, it's money being left on the table (unlikely they will contact you to pay you more money:)). My last column in the excel sheet is "Renewal Date", and every month I check it out to see if there are renewals that I need to email. The contact's info is in the sheet as well.

 

Now that I made the sheet it is very easy to keep up with and super helpful.

From now on I should stop giving forever links. The problem is keeping track of them and notify the advertiser when their links expire. There are so many advertisers that just want 1 post.

 

Any ideas on how to keep track ? Maybe its time I hired a VA :) 

I also use Google Calenders to remind me about 7 days out from expiration to email the advertiser.

Currently I'm seeing a big push towards sponsored posts on my blog.

I get about 2 sponsored post requests daily.

I charge anywhere between $50 to $100.
