i will second Jason's comments. initially, when your site is new the ads will be targeted to your content, and those tags help spiders focus better. now as the site gets older and gains traction, google starts to factor in its own intelligence into the mix and predicts what your reader is likely wanting to see or interested it. the new laws on internet privacy tracking should be interesting to follow, as it has heavy implications for bloggers, and google i am sure the lobbying dollars are already earmarked for this initiative...

The other useful thing you can do is add comments to your post that might help adsense understand your content better as well like:

In your HTML as well, it seems to work as well.

Not sure if you're saying this tongue in cheek or not.

This looks a little black-hat to me, since a spider will see the text, but not the readers (unless they look at the source).

Hmmm interesting idea Jason, never thought about targeting the post and getting rid of the clutter around, kind of always assumed adsense would be able to do that anyway.....

Will take a quick look at adsense optimiser too although I am trying to keep plugin usage down.

I use a good plugin called Adsense Optimizer that will virtually automate this for you. You get to specify 3 different ad placements with differing sizes, designs, etc. Everyone should install this ASAP. Since I installed it my Adsense revenue went from around $0.50 per month to over $30 the very month that I installed it. Big difference!

Thanks for sharing this Sandy, I will try this out.

SEO and adsense are separate.

The content of your page does drive which adsense ads show up, but only partially. The browsing history and Google Empire-of-Information determines what that user wants to see most. :)

You can control which parts of your content actually get used by adsense to determine which ads to display, instead of letting it look at your sidebars, header, and footer for irrelevent content.

Use

<!– google_ad_section_start –>

and

<!– google_ad_section_end –>

Edit your theme to put those immediately before and after your post text to get the most relevent ads. If you're using a good theme, there will be an option you can set to make that happen without using the editor.

In the Atahualpa theme, in the 'Edit Center Column' section, put the start as the last item in 'Content ABOVE the LOOP' and the first item in 'Content BELOW the LOOP'.

Just to be clear, in Atahualpa I'd use "<!– google_ad_section_start –>" twice - once as the last item in Above Loop and once as the first item in Below Loop, right? I wouldn't use "<!– google_ad_section_end –>" at all?

BTW, thanks! I didn't know about this and use Atahualpa, so this is GREAT!

No, I'm dumb and typed that wrong. Put "<!– google_ad_section_start –>" as the last item in Above Loop and "<!– google_ad_section_end –>" as the first item in below loop. Adsense will look at everything between start and end.

Awesome - got it! You're not dumb - that is ingenious!

Hi

Can someone please clarify something for me.

hen I go to Adwords I can look up what a particular word pays, how many clicks it gets etc. If I have adwords (for example to advertise my accounting business) I pay whenever someone searches on that particlar word, my ad comes up, and they click on it. Does the converse work for Adsense?

For Example

- Do the words I use in my post drive the ad content in the adsense ad on my blog? I presume that it does.

- Therefore, does it mean that if I use certain 'key' words in my post, that the higher value or more regular ads will be shown? So, that in the event that someone clicks on it, I get more money?

I think this is called SEO - but I'm not sure. If anyones got some expertise in this area, that would be great.

BTW - I'm not planning to make my blog dull by targeting certain words - I prefer my freewheeling style no matter how little it makes me.

Thanks
