Paypal is used by most everyone. I've accepted checks in the past, but that was actually more from the smaller fish than the big ones…it seems most everyone in the webmastering community prefers PayPal from top to bottom. Good thing about a check, though, is that you save the 2.9% Paypal takes.

I've only had maybe .25% of my clients/customers ever want another option.

As for text links, I'd demand quite a bit. You have to look at it as every new link is less Google juice for your own posts. Besides, a lot of companies that buy links are in "bad neighborhoods." Make it worth your while, and I'd always shoot for long-term link deals. Google is pretty good at finding out what is going on when you're swapping links in and out like its your dayjob. Locking in people for 6-12 months at a time has another benefit: most people willing to front the cash will renew at the end of 6 or 12 months. The monthly subs, at least for me, tended to be more "fly-by-nighters."

Hi,

What do you usually charge for text links? I have read a few of the posts about prices and discount for longer contract which all seem to be geared towards banners and I was curious about links. I am trying to get organized with prices and locations for different type of adds as I started to receive inquiries.

Thanks!

I start at $50 usually and the advertiser usually offers $40. I accept at this point lol. My 1st advertiser contacted me in May and wanted to do a year long term. They agreed to a lump sum of $600 ($50 per month). I was graduating HS at the time and it was a nice early grad. gift.

$50 is usually a good spot to start at if possible. You can adjust upwards as you gain more subscribers/traffic/PageRank, as Crystal seems to have done! Good job!

Make sure you don't let advertisers push you around - say specifically want to you want. Some can be pushy and make a lot of demands: "Can you put it somewhere else besides "Sponsors?" "I'm on a budget, I need a lower price." I'll tell all of them my terms in my first email, and they're still trying to get me to change 3 emails later. At this point, I spell out my terms ONE more time. After that, I'm done responding.

I charge between $50-$100 a month depending on location. $100 is for the top of the left sidebar and $50 is for the bottom of the right sidebar. The left is more expensive than the right since it is seen first - my prices go top, middle, bottom at $100, $80, $60 for left and $90, $70, $50 for right with a 5% discount for 3 months, 10% discount for 6 months, and a 20% discount for 12 months. Good luck!
