I may have to settle for it in the sidebar.

You shouldn't have to manipulate any code to use it. Just plug in the image and URL on the widget setting and drop the widget in the sidebar.

Get the plugin, activate it, stick it in the sidebar and add code - click save.  That's what I did ....
