Alexa counts those with the toolbar, so if you want to get your ranking up, get lots of webmaster traffic, as they are most likely to be carrying the toolbar.

Edwin is right on. You want Yakezie members to visit your blog and webmasters to visit your blog, as we have the toolbar (I have an Alexa plugin with the same effect) installed. That is what drives up your rank.

However, I have noticed some correlation with Alexa to general traffic.

If you continue to post and network I can't imagine it going backwards for an extended period. For what it's worth my score responds to networking much more than posts. For instance a post will move it down maybe 1,000 points but a swap will move it down almost 25,000 points. The swap from this past weekend moved me from 289,000 to 265,000. The only posts I have made are the swap post and the follow-up to the swap post.

I would also imagine that it's going to fluctuate a lot when you're ranking is in the millions. You're probably competing with a lot of other lower-traffic blogs (similar to what mine is currently). Small changes in your traffic might have big effects on your rankings.

Suba makes great points. Putting up content people want to read is just one part of it. Getting involved with other bloggers - particularly many folks here (members or challengers) - is a great way to accelerate that process. Commenting and being a part of others blogs (and being involved here) can help get your blog moving in the right direction with Alexa. Also, keep in mind there are some swings here and there based on averages as mentioned above.

Alexa ranking is a 3 month average. So sometimes it might do this way/that way. You will see that especially more as you get to the lower ranking as the competition is high. Do you usual thing, promote other blogs, comment, keep writing good content... it will get down. Thats my experience anyway...

Hi,

I joined a few weeks ago. I had a very young blog when I started (about a month old). I was making good progress with my Alexa ranking. 24 Million----->16 Million----->11 Million------>9.8 Million --------> 3.8 Million and now it is creeping the wrong way and I am at 3.99 Million. Does this happen to you?

I understand if I was not working on the blog, but I have been working to create backlinks and my traffic has been growing.

Any insight would be helpful.

Thanks,

Joe
