I agree with Evan. If a site wants to link to you/mention you then awesome! Once there's a condition it's no longer a gift.

That said, I have no problem putting something up from a site like Plutus, but that's also because I know it's run by Flexo and Tom.

I also have no problem if a site links to me and says, "hey, you might want to mention it to your readers." But they have to be ok with my not linking back if I don't want to.

I think the key here is a big part of what Yakezie is - to GIVE. Once you expect something in return, like a badge, you aren't giving anymore.

Better to have an ounce of skepticism.

I had something like this a few months back. I don't even recall the site but it was the same scheme. I was on some list of great PF blogs that they even sent me a link to. Looked cool but when I went to their main page, there was no link anywhere to that list. I called them out on it and they were like 'Oh, we'll look right into that but in the mean time, make sure to tell your readers all about it'

Sure, let me get right on that.

LOL.

Good catch recognizing it as a scheme that has benefits for one side only (and it's not you).

That seems like an 'award' that's not much of one, unfortunately. Good call on your part. Interestingly, that's a high alexa-ranked site....5,810.....

I saw that too. And, it's got a really strong Page Authority and MozRank too. Tried to get the PR but the system seems to be down right now

UGH I WISH THIS TECHNIQUE WOULD DIE! It is such bullshit:

If the company wanted to give you an award they would - they don't need a link from you (think plutus).

Ignore them...they want you to give them a link inside an image.

Aww, thank you, I'm flattered! The award was from http://tips.become.com ...it doesn't look like anything but a content farm. I posted it but deactivated the link....hmmm.

You do have a really good blog, first of all. So having said that, I would be suspicious if something seems askew - such as no awards page, etc. Some such awards are ways to do just what you said - get links. What was the award site?

I recently was contacted by a random site that wanted to recognize my blog with an award. Problem is- when you go to the site, there is no, "awards page" or "editor's pick" page to highlight winning blogs...is this just a new way to sucker bloggers into free links or am I just getting too suspicious?
