As for the Blogger site, I would change all the posts to drafts (because Google frowns upon duplicate content) or take down the old site completely.

1) While I was working on the transfer, I got new comments on my .blogspot site. Is there a way to import the new comments? The only option I see is to clear all data and start over, which I do not want to do.

2) Once I'm satisfied that I no longer need anything from Blogger, should I delete the blog there? I currently have it set invisible to search engines and not listed on Blogger, but I don't know if that's sufficient.

My company is actually going through the huge process of completely redoing our website, and I've had a little exposure to it, so I'm somewhat familiar with how to retrieve all my permalinks and create a 301 redirect. 

I'll try getting started on this project this weekend, wish me luck!

Godaddy sucks for hosting but I get all of my domain names from them. I use hostgator to host but once traffic ramps up I'll prob switch to dedicated.

Definitely make the switch sooner rather than later.

.com versus .org

Definitely go with self hosted Wordpress (.org).

I used a blogger plugin that was supposed to automatically redirect links but ultimately, most of them did not redirect because you really have no control over Blogger.

I only had about 20 posts at the time but if you have more I would highly recommend getting help (hire Nuts and Bolts Media) to save yourself some headaches and so you don't miss anything.

I switched just about a year ago and I wish I would have done it much sooner. 

I use GoDaddy for my registration and DNS but have also heard that they are awful for hosting.  I use a company called StableHost, they are pretty good and the thing that won me over is that your rate that you get when you sign up is the same rate you pay every year after.  Many other companies will give you a great rate the first year but then jack it up in subsequent years. 

Permalinks are a big issue between Blogger and Wordpress.  One of them (I think it's Blogger) will create variations on your title, so if you have words like A, And, & The in your post title, those won't be in your URL.  Doing a straight conversion will often 'break' some of these.  I believe there are plugins that will somehow handle this, but I couldn't figure it out, though I'm sure it was something relatively easy.

Wordpress can be a tad overwhelming at first but it's pretty good.  Just be careful with your plugins.  Don't install a ton of them, and make sure that the ones you do install are vetted, because an iffy one can contain code that will allow hackers in. 

One of the other tips you want to do after you get your WP blog set up is get rid of the 'admin' account. Create another administrative account with a different user name, use that as your default, and delete the admin account. Hackers always try to 'log in' using that account name, so that will be your number one defense against hacking.

The domain really doesn't affect the migration process; the steps are the same either way. It does save you a little bit of time since you won't need to do a domain transfer, but honestly the domain is much easier than all the other steps.

I can't recommend switching to Wordpress highly enough. I wouldn't bother with WP.com (the free version) because it's really no different than Blogger (just a different interface). Self-hosted is the only way to go if you're serious about blogging – that means the site is 100% yours and no one can say a word about what you post as long as you aren't violating your host's TOS. Free Wordpress doesn't allow you to use plugins, which kind of defeats the purpose of using Wordpress in the first place; it's the plugins that make it great.

You don't necessarily have to know anything about coding to have a Wordpress blog. Some themes are easier to customize than others; it just depends on what you want to do and how you want your site to look. There are literally thousands of themes available, all with different methods and levels of customization.

As for the actual act of blogging on Wordpress, it's not all that different from Blogger. You drag and drop widgets (same thing as gadgets on Blogger) into your theme's widget areas, you go to the Posts section to write a post, and you go to the Pages section to add a page. It does take some time to get used to where to find everything but most people adjust within a week or two. 

A few notes about the migration process:

1. If you registered your domain through Blogger, you'll probably want to transfer it elsewhere to keep Google's mitts off anything to do with your site. Plus it's ridiculously complicated to get to the DNS settings for a domain registered through Blogger, which you would need to do to switch to self-hosted.

2. I offer really cheap (and fast) hosting as part of my business. If you'd rather stick with a big name host, it doesn't get any better than HostGator. As long as your site stays relatively "normal sized" and doesn't get too much traffic, HostGator will meet your needs.

3. Watch your permalinks – to keep all your links on other sites from breaking, you'll either need to maintain the same permalink structure as Blogger or set up a redirect.

4. All you have to do to keep your Feedburner subscribers is change the original feed address in your Feedburner settings, but don't do that until you've set your permalinks. The new feed address will be genyfinancejourney.com/feed/ instead of the longer URL that Blogger uses.

5. Sorry for the shameless plug, but I do have to mention that I offer migrations from Blogger to Wordpress in case you don't want to deal with this yourself.

In short, I strongly suggest that you move to WP as soon as possible, not because I want you to hire me, but because it is better than Blogger in every way. If you have any questions feel free to email me or respond here. And sorry for the super long response. :)
