@Retireby40, I haven't really had any luck with Facebook, Twitter has been better. You can add a welcome page using basic FBML like I have to encourage people to hit the 'Like' button, but to be honest I'm thinking about deleting the page altogether. My page is here

One other good source of traffic I have discovered is doing blog link-ups. Of course, that works better for a site like mine that offers daily tips and the like than it would for a site with more heavy financial advice. I have introduced many readers to my blog, and as a result gained subscribers, by participating in link-ups.

And like others here, I also recommend Yakezie, guest blogging, and SEO as other very effective ways of growing your traffic.

Are Facebook and Twitter that vital building traffic? I used Facebook for myself but not my site. I dont use Twitter all. I suppose I could create a profile for my blog in both, Im just curious as to how much value it adds.

I hear more and more that a blog carnival really helps....more specifically, hosting a blog carnival. What does hosting a carnival involve?

Your suggestions are all good!

What you need to figure out is what works best for you. Some people rock out Twitter while some may build a super Facebook community. Many here are active in the forums here (lots of great info to be had).

Be you and work that!

It's easy to get lost in all the "should do" things that you forget to pump out great content and be yourself.

That said...

Commenting - great way to read up on what's going on in the community you write about. Also good way to get your name out there (so long as your comments are relevent and insightful).

Forums - The folsk here are great and you can get some great info and build some nice blogging friendships.

Tweeting - Good way to build a community and get your articles out as well as promote others.

Carnivals - Gets your articles out there and gets you some links back as well.

Advertisers - If you can work it then great. Just make sure you have the content/brand to justify it now. Otherwise build up your site and the advertisers will come.

Guest posting - Awesome way to profile your writing and get exposure as well as links.
