I was defaulting to checked, but then I had got emails from commenters asking me to unsubscribe them because they were getting too many emails for popular posts.  So I changed it to unchecked.

 

I'm interested in reading what other people prefer.

Also I like comment redirect which brings the commenter to a page if this was the first time they were commenting.
