Must admit, I don't comment on so many blogs that use Disqus, as I find it a pain to use.

Thanks for the input! I've never tried DISQUS myself, but personally, I know that I was deterred from commenting on some blogs that had the DISQUS plugin simply because of the mandatory registration aspect.

 

I'll have to look more into this plugin

I've noticed on most blogs I go to that use Disqus, I don't need to register to comment. However, I did go to one site today that required you to register with Disqus (or facebook/google/etc), so I tried to comment using the FB registration, but that failed multiple times. So I think that you can set it up to not require registration, if you choose to try it out.

Overkill right? Well long story short - they don't play well together. Several of the test comments I put in my self were getting flagged or lost.

 

I deactivated GASP an Conditional Captcha and everything works fine now. I'm going to try working with just Akismet for now. Looks like a quality service.

Captcha + GASP will drive people nuts.

I hate captcha.  It forces me back to the keyboard after i've entered a comment when all I want to do is make a click or two to complete my comment.  And if the Captcha fails, I leave immediately - no comment for you!

Big blogs have found Askimet to block legit comments and many have switched to other tools.  One of those (Pat Flynn uses it now!) is GASP. 

Personally, I found GASP alone did lose some comments to spam which I had to use manage, but I also use Bad Behavior which stops bad IP addresses from even getting to your approved/pending msgs. 

I get about 3 spam a day now.  Usually from the same entity (where he's figured out how to get around my blocking him @ the hosting service). 

I really like GASP.  Heck, I endorse it (no affiliate relationship!).  I'm always happy when I leave a comment and all I have to do is click the "confirm you are human" box right above the "submit" button.  I know my comment will get through.

I've now installed Bad Behavior too.

A great simple tool is GASP

It basically just adds a check box to confirm if you are a spammer or not. You will eliminate 80% that way.

I use disqus and require a user to be registered. It's inconvenient for some but it's saved me so much time approving comments.

I assume that GASP is Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin? I've installed this plugin! Looking at the layout on my blog I can tell that a lot of other web masters are using this plugin too. I just didnt' know which one it was. thanks so much!

Are you using Askimet? It's not perfect, but it's easy to use and free.
