Delete! If it's spammy then get rid of it. As a reader I won't comment on posts where I see other comments that make no sense or look spammy - it feels like a waste of time since the blogger doesn't care.

Having spammy comments reflects badly on your blog. Remove spam, but keep genuine comments even if they are controversial even if the commentator doesn't agree with you or your post. I know certain bloggers remove comments because I didn't agree with the post- I think that is a bit extreme. Freedom of expression and all.

I've had some major issue with spammy comments. I tried various wordpress tools for keeping them out and didn't have much luck. It got to the point where I had to manually approve all comments as they came in. Even then it would be one decent comment per 10 bits of spam... extremely frustrating.

Eventually I had to make a decision that I know isn't too popular with many of my fellow bloggers. I went to disqus. People can now comment in real time and spam has been virtually eliminated.

I'm always confused by this. The two blogging platforms I've used (Blogger and Wordpresss) make comments no-follow by default, so unless a blogger changes this setting for some reason, most comments will never pass page rank. So, what's the benefit in trying to pass spam comments?

It is really easy to turn off the no-follow. There are lists out there that give almost every site that has no-follow turned off. Since the software that sends these spam comments is entirely automated, they don't care if they get links on sites that are nofollow. Most of these are the black-hat people that are selling link building services to others.

Always remove spam comments. They hurt your Google ranking. They are just trying to leech off of your PageRank for SEO.

Hi John. I personally don't allow any comments on my blog if they are not furthering the discussion. I get tonnes of spam saying things such as "Good post!". If I let them on, then any intelligent discussion would be severely diluted by them.

Most of these comments are from automated software, which is why they don't refer to anything actually written in the post.

As for commentary rights, I'm all for them. Someone can disagree with what I say, and that's great for debate. However I don't allow commentary rights for spam, insults,or nonsensical comments!
