I treat my site like a bit of an online CV - I fall on my own sword when it comes to redesigns and logos. I started with a free theme back in 2009, but once I realized how much I was hacking the theme, I switched to a 'Genesis' framework theme and I haven't looked back since.

If you're interested in web design in general, I'd encourage you to play around with your site design on your own - spin up another test blog and play around to see how everything comes together.

I hired a custom logo designer via 99Designs when I hit a point where my monthly revenue could cover the cost (about $250). I did my design myself and have since started a web design business (see the signature below). Think of upgrading your site as an investment. You have to put something in to get something out, but be mindful of how much you spend, like most of us PF bloggers do, so you don't blow a ton of money on something that won't help your site grow.

My blog looks like kids' stuff compared to the more established sites. I did some google searching for custom site designs and logos and oh my! They are expensive.

When and why did you decide to get a custom design? Words of wisdom? Do I need a logo - looks like most packages don't include one and I'd pay extra. I'm very fond of my penny cross header I have now - perhaps that's all I need?

Not asking you to tell me what to do - just share from your experiences and lessons learned. Thanks!
