I guess it depends on the company. I thought unpaid lunch periods were likely okay to comment and write, provided that your company doesn't have a problem with it. After reading the responses. I'm rethinking everything.

I did during the dead times when I worked for a company up until last July. I used to work in a position where you were handed a stack of work and then sat around waiting for more work or phone calls when you were done. The trick was that we were actually asked to "look busy"…really, they told us that. I actually should be extremely thankful I ever had that job for 6 years…it was the entire reason I ever had the time to find "blogs", what they were, and jump on in.

Money Reasons on Do you blog at work?

No, working in the finance industry, everything is highly scrutinized (at least where I'm at). And the ports are blocked via our proxy server at corporate. I don't even have access to gmail, yahoo mail or hotmail (although there are ways that I know of to get around this...).

Quite honestly, I would feel guilty blogging at work too much. I wouldn't mind doing an occasional tweet or a quick comment on a blog during a break, but to take an hour or so to write a post is too much, at least for where I work.

That's my job, but other jobs I can see it being perfection acceptable as an option, and I've even blogged about it here: Working Two Jobs At Once – Making Twice As Much, in fact I've toyed with this idea myself. As TightFistedMizer states, a security job is perfect for doing another job since mostly you are a body at that location. And besides, many of the security jobs don't pay all that much!

I guess it depends on the job, and if it's worth the risk of losing the job if they catch you and it's frowned upon.

For my job (technology), I don't cross the line, but I do go to the library where I do a lot of work in an hour's timeframe... I usually answer/read email, commment on other blogs, check my systems and in rare occasions (when I have a great idea for a topic), I crank out a post.

Good luck!

I once had a security job where they didn't care what I did as long as I stayed awake. This was long before I started blogging so I usually just read all night. It would be pretty nice to find a job like that now. I'd have plenty of time to blog and I'd be getting paid. I wonder what the best jobs are for being able to blog on the job.

Oh, as for if you can do it during your lunch break, I don't think anyone here can really answer that: you have to look through your company policy and see what they say. However, I think you can assume the following:

Outgoing URLs and IPs are most likely logged.

Outgoing packets may be sniffed. That means that all HTTP traffic is potentially visible to the system administrator.

HTTPS traffic is encrypted, but your computer may have a keylogger installed.

Your computer may also have a screen-capture or remote-logging capability installed, without you being aware of when this is taking place.

Just assume you have someone standing over your shoulder, even if it is lunch break. Doesn't mean you're not allowed, but you might want to be prudent.

Lots of varying opinions! I never log in to my own blog at work. I just read other blogs and comment, or used to at least. I think I'm going to try avoiding doing this even though it is what I enjoy doing most during my lunch break. I will instead just try to read blogs through google reader and draft posts in my gmail during my lunch break from now on I think.

Here are a few ideas to not blog at work but keep creative juices flowing:

1. Keep a notepad at your desk. Jot down post ideas when they come to you.

2. Install Dropbox and write up a rough outline when you get the idea and save it to the Dropbox. Finish the post when you get home or during lunch. (Get Dropbox free here, I use it every single day for blogging and personal stuff)

3. Add a notepad widget to your phone and write post ideas when they come to you.

I do spend a lot of time reading and commenting blogs at work, as well as tweeting. I do some tweeting on my phone but find it easier to do on the computer. I work at a large corporation and I know the IT guys...so I seem to get away with it. But I'd tread carefully.

I don't exactly blog, but I do type up "rough drafts" of posts in Outlook and email it to myself at home. HOWEVER, I only ever do that after work - when I wait for an hour after work before my husband comes to meet me. I used to comment after work as well... until I got a virus from one of them - and had to call IT the next morning to fix my computer.

Now I stick to emailing myself. I think that's much safer...

I only do internet things on my breaks or off time. I feel that anything else would be stealing.
