I have to agree that personalized content to a specific newspaper writer helps a lot (doesn't always work, but will work much more often that a press release). Think of it this way -- when you receive an email that has obviously been sent out to 100 other bloggers about someone wanting to write a guest post (press release) and a request that has obviously been written specifically to you (personalized request), which one are you more likely to follow up on?

It takes more time, but you should get better results doing it this way.

The key to anything is to keep trying, but you don't want to spam the reporters.

If your press releases aren't getting a bite, how about you reach out to the reporter directly.

"Hello Reporter,

I have read 55 articles you've published over the last 5 years and really enjoy your point of view on personal finance. I really loved your recent article on finding moonlighting gigs and I used your tips when locating my current freelance position.

I'm an expert in dealing with credit card debt: in the past 5 years my wife and I have paid off 55K of debt, while buying a house, renovating a kitchen and bathroom, and traveling to Europe twice. If there's anything I can do to help you in an upcoming article, please do not hesitate to contact me directly."

That almost always works.

I've tried submitting a press release to many newspapers in my local area and hometown as well as personal finance magazines, but still didn't get any bites.

Is the key to try multiple times until it works?

Hello all,

Quite new here, but this thread caught my eye. I just wrapped up an interview with the WSJ because I was looking for unique opportunities to spread the word about my new project.

Long story short, there was a personal finance article that interested me and the reporter's email was included in the story, so I shot her a quick email and she contacted me within a few hours to set up an interview.

If you're going to seek out offline opportunities, you need to make sure you have a plan. Here are my tips:

Know the reporter's needs: Don't try to pitch a PF story to a lifestyle writer. Know what the reporter writes about and craft your story to meet their needs.

Make the reporter's job easy: If you come to them with a great narrative, a pre-formed story, and all the supporting information and details they need, you have a much better chance to get the story out.

Be an expert: If you're well versed in your topic and you're easy to talk to and easy to cite, reporters will come back to you over and over again.

I tend to look for niche publications (big and small) where I can write a finance article toward that niche (that's just me). It's definitely easier to get into smaller publications, but they won't bring in as much traffic.

Definitely not easy, but it's doable. Here's is another approach to consider. An effective way I have found is to take an article that you have already written, rewrite it as a news story with everything the staff writer needs and some quotes from yourself. Just like you and your blog, staff writers are expected to produce a certain amount which can be difficult for them. If you give them a well written article where they only need to make minor changes, you are much more likely to get a mention than trying to get your own articles published.

Great idea...but not as easy as it sounds. I have tried submitting my blog to several local newspapers and asked for a partnership of some sort, but have yet to hear back. I have noticed that they do have a online "blogger" columns, but still no bites.

I think that bloggers sometimes forget about offline publications when it comes to promoting their blogs. If you write guest posts for other blogs, also consider writing for offline publications. While offline publications don't usually bring in as many people, I have found that they are a lot more likely to click on ads compared to those that get their information off the Internet (think about it, how often do you click on ads). In fact, I had my biggest earning day ever due to a mention in an offline magazine. Just a friendly reminder as you put together your promotion strategy.
