I use aweber to facilitate subscriptions to my free eBook 20 Minute Guide to Investing. Long term I expect to create an "infrequent" newsletter. Have other priorities right now.

I'm very mindful of not "annoying my readers" with lots of mail.

I used the emails of everyone who has commented on my site and sent everyone an email once. It wasn't a newsletter; it was when I completely redesigned my site and wanted to let my readers know about the new design. I put a note at the bottom of the email that I wouldn't email them again until the next site redesign, which would be probably never, but let them know they could "unsubscribe" if they wanted. (Nobody did out of about 200)

It drove a ton of traffic to my site and I've definitely seen an increase in visits since then. I think it worked so well because it was just a one time thing for a really good reason.

Renting or trading? People do that???? Have you tried that? If so, what's your experience been? Wouldn't that be considered spamish too?

If you rent or trade your list make sure you tell the customer that in the opt-in process.

I have a MailChimp RSS Campaign set up that sends out all posts by e-mail. You can see the sign up options on my site.

Do you use mailchimp for the rss feed too or just email list? I've heard you talk about that before and meant to have a look see...guess there's no time like the present. If I switch, do my current subscription go too (not that i have that many). Thanks!

I have an email list as well. I use mail chimp. It gives you more options than just a feedburner email subscription because you can customize the look of your email campaigns. You should definitely start building an email list now if you think you might want to in the future.

I use MailChimp for my e-mail list. SPAM laws in the US require that e-mail lists are opt-in only. I added my Feedburner subscribers to my MailChimp "all posts" list and newsletter list. I give people an option to sign up for one or both with a form on the site. 100% automated.

I kind of thought of doing this same thing! Adding the emails from my comments to my feedburner, but I did think of that as spamming, and I really do not want to lose any of my readers because of it. So, I haven't done this, and probably will not do it in the future.

I only keep my email list from my newsletter email list. I've never taken any other emails from comments or feedburner.

You have to be very careful with building a mailing list. As other mentioned, the last thing you want is to be considered as a spammer.

I've been running through a few strategies to build my mailing lists. I'll share them in a thread on this forum (and with my newsletter subscribers) shortly.

I agree. Definitely wouldn't want to add email addresses from comments without someone's consent.

If you add emails to your list without getting an explicit opt-in, you're kind of a spammer. Unless you have a box to check for opt-in when they comment, don't add them to a mass mailing list.
