I was surprised by the question as well! Since I have left a comment here or there on people's articles that are posted on their walls, I had a slight stomach-drop when I thought that maybe I wasn't supposed to:).

Whew!

I personally think that if you're participating in social media that you should be, well, social. If someone wants to ask a question or leave feedback that isn't necessarily related to a topic that you started, why restrict them? I leave it open to fans starting new topics. That being said, trying to get Facebook fans and get any type of momentum has been a big waste of time, so far. I've had much better luck building my Twitter fan base, so I spend 99% of my social media time there.

Thanks for this feedback. It seems like we are in agreement that social media is all about interacting and engaging. My Facebook wall is completely open to posts from friends/fans, comments, etc. I haven't had much engagement from others but I welcome it. I want to build community and don't want to be the only one posting on my wall forever.

I can't recall any specific instances, but I've had comments deleted from some bloggers walls. I've never posted anything offensive or spammed my articles, but some people just don't want to have others leave their mark. Kind of takes the social out of social media. Without follower interaction, these sites are lifeless.

Same with Twitter conversations: anyone can jump in. It is the worlds biggest conversation after all.

The whole point of having a presence on Facebook would be to interact with others, or at least I would assume that's why people set up pages. That being the case, I can't imagine people not wanting others to interact with them by posting on the page wall. Unless there is some other express purpose of setting up that page, I'm not sure those people really understand the "social" implication of social media.

Just out of curiosity Hunter, did you see people making posts about not wanting comments on their Facebook wall? I'd be interested in reading and seeing what the context those remarks were made in.

This is a polarizing issue. Some of us welcome comments, discussion, interaction with others on our BLOG Facebook wall. Others are offended by even the smallest uninvited intrusion onto our wall.

What's your position: are Facebook comments welcome on your wall, or not?
