I've mentioned this G penalty upfront to a couple advertisers, and they didn't seem overly concerned.

Not my experience. I have found about a 80/20 split ... 80% concerned.

Granted. I only have a small, limited sample.

Yeah, even if a it wasn't a formally written contract, the basics are there. A basic contract consists of an offer, acceptance, and consideration which you have. The communications represent the offer & acceptance, while the documentation of payment represent the consideration. Now, if the person wasn't authorized or competent to make the deal, or if any part of the arrangement wasn't legal, then it could be voided. Granted, I'm not a lawyer, but the way I like to debate and sometimes challenge people, I've been told I'd make a great attorney

You have a contract. You are not required to give anyone a refund. If you choose to out of the goodness of your heart or to build goodwill, you have that right. They can also ask you to take down the links, which is probably better for you and there is no reason not to comply.

That makes sense, but I didn't know that a couple emails back and forth counted as a contract. Good to know, thanks Eric.

In many cases, the advertisers have also been penalized or are concerned about receiving a penalty. I only had a few ask for refunds, and most had JUST been placed within a week of the smackdown. Many others asked for removal of the ad without requesting a refund, which is fine by me! I agree with you that it probably wouldn't work that way in reverse, but things are very confusing and uncertain right now; seems like no one really knows what they're supposed to do.

I guess it's not that bad if they were fresh ads. Removing the ads and not having to refund the money doesn't sound bad either. I hadn't heard about that, I just thought everybody was wanting their ads down and their money back. Thanks Andrea.

While I haven't been directly affected by G's penalizing of page ranks, I've been following some of it. Still, I'm not sure I'm understanding what's really going on.

Here's what I get: G is punishing bloggers from selling links, okay I get it---it's dumb but I understand. So a blog is dropped in PR, sometime down to zero.

Where I'm confused: Advertisers who have already paid for their ads/links to be placed on a blog are asking for refunds and terminations of deals already made. WTF? Does this seem right? Example: Say I sell a link while my blog is a PR2 a month before G updates PR again. After the update, I move to a PR3 or PR4---it's not like the advertiser is going to be required to pay more because my PR increased, nor would the ads be removed and refunded. So what's going on here? Aren't we taking a risk by selling the links and ads (whether from G or readers potentially being unhappy)?
