I usually tip the tax which is 13% here. It seems like that's too low according to previous posts. If the service was superb, I'll tip higher. My thoughts on tipping is that it should be given only if the service is good. I've received some really bad service in the past and feel that someone shouldn't be rewarded for bad behaviour.

I must admit, I sometimes like it in places like Europe where there's NO gratuity. 17% service fee is just baked into the bill, and no agonizing over .

Double the tax as a standard (9.5% here in WA). So 19%. Sometimes I'll go 25-30% if it's exceptional service.

I think no matter what the guidelines say about what’s proper, you should leave the small present of money for your server based upon how good you think the service was at the meal. If it was great, you could leave more than 20% and if it was terrible than you need to leave a tip to let your server know that the experience was less than acceptable.

I usually tip 15-20% for most things, unless the service is really bad. In those cases I'll leave a small tip - or if it's really bad - no tip.

Weekend delivery (usually pizza in my neck of the woods) and eating out, starting at 20%. For exceptional service, I'll go more.

For takeout, I'll usually do 10%.

For sit-down service, I'll usually figure our 20% and then round up to the nearest dollar. For situations were the "server" is little more than a bus-boy (like at buffets where they bring you a drink and take your plates), I'll usually only leave a dollar or two.

Delivery people, I'll take back any bills $5 or higher and tell them to keep the rest of the change. If paying my card, I'll figure out 20%. I always try to tip high with delivery drivers to make up for the years that I didn't know you were supposed to tip them and so I didn't.

But I get the point about tip inflation. When I was in high school, the standard that most people quote was 15%, then it was 18%, now it's 20%

Basically, my opinion is that you are not required to tip your servers. I still do, unless they're really awful. I like to tip based on how good of a job they do. I don't blame the server and tip less for things that aren't in their control, like being super busy or the kitchen issues. The more responsive and attentive they are, the better I'll tip them.

Tip means To Insure Promptness. If I did it that way they would pay me but being that I am in the game I do 17-20 unless someone pisses me off... Then I pay 0

Oh I hate the mandatory gratuity as well. Especially as I would normally tip higher than what the mandatory gratuity was. I have had one issue where gratuity was added but no one was informed about it (turns out we had recieved an older menu where the note was not on there) so that turned into a minor fiasco.

I used to double tax but 15% was too hard when I moved to Oregon (we don't have sales tax) -- 20% was MUCH easier math. So now it's 20% at minimum if there's food. If I'm drinking, a tip of $1 a drink is sufficient, even if it's a $10 drink. The exception for me is when there's those "convenient" tip calculators on the receipt -- that's insulting, and the server will only get the minimum.

I always tip 20% of the after-tax total unless the service is just awful. I've worked in the restaurant industry and my wife has worked in other customer service related fields and it's UNBELIEVABLE how poorly those people get treated.

I will tip 20-35% if the service is outstanding and if I think the person deserves it.
