Or if anyone else is having luck with media.net over Adsense would like to hear.

retireby40, good questions.

I didn't say Google banned my site. I said I banned Google's bot from crawling on one of my sites. It was not obeying robots.txt and I'm not having any of that!

Adsense is big, but one of the least efficient ways of earning money. It's for amateurs. It's small change unless you have humungous traffic. Go CPA – from CJ to Clickbank to independent afffiliate programs like EPN (publisher.ebaypartnernetwork.com).

Multiple traffic sources? Hmmm. Where do I start?

- How did you get to this page today? Loyalty. Build a community, get repeat visitors! How do you get to other destinations without using an SE? Think. As people here are such big fans of Alexa, try this: alexa.com/siteinfo/facebook.com#

- Find places that get lots of traffic and give them a reason to send you some. For example, create authority content on a subject so Wikipedia uses you as a reference and links to you (you could give it the Wiki a little nudge ;)). Find other big sites in your niche.

- How many visitors to your site have you captured in your list? None? Why? A weekly email to a large list can drive all the traffic needed to make a healthy full-time income. From the posts above, some are already doing this.

- Build an affiliate network, let affiliates send you traffic. Don't have a product? So what? Go buy the IP to some digital product (script/ebook) and create a page to sell it. Even if you give affiliates 100% of the rev as their commission you'll still get plenty free traffic that "leaks" into the rest of your site.

I'm in a rush but may offer more suggestions later. You're doing well to keep SE traffic at 50%. Try to lower it to a point where it won't make a big difference to you if the SEs stop sending you visitors. (Barry Schwartz – seoroundtable.com – has some scary articles on how losing SE traffic has devastated some people). 50% from comment work is too high. Too much hard work. Try and break the connection between effort and visitors. You want sustainability, you want traffic even when you're not posting comments.

Earning

- Advertise. Test returns. Fine tune campaigns. Pay less for your ads than you make from your traffic.

- Try other networks.I'll try and post some examples below

- Avoid all the "make money" gurus. They're so full of BS they should be euthanized. Find non shill forums such as experienced-people.net and for more technical stuff (apache commands/programming) webmasterworld.com is good. I mention those two specifically because they're the ones I know that are not commercial …but there are others like sitepoint, V7N etc.

- Create your own product! Use plimus.com or clickbank.com or other network to handle all the tech stuff for you.

Some programs below. No, this is not a cut and paste. I'm typing from the top of my head. Many are complete junk and some may now be defunct, so don't treat this as a recommendation. In fact, I strongly recommend against some of the below, but I'm not telling you which ones as I'm really not here to promote or damage any particular brand. Go do the research yourself.

Hi,

How do you money if Google banned your site? With adsense?

When you say develop multiple traffic sources, what are these sources?

I have about 50/50 SE/referral traffic. The referral traffic are mostly from other blogs after I leave comments and some blog round up, listing sites like Wisebread, and mainstream sites like Yahoo and US news that I have a working relationship with.

Can you recommend some ways to develop more traffic sources?

Thanks

You will NOT make anything with Adsense and Media.net unless you have a good amount of search engine traffic.

What a load of bunkum. Why does it have to be SE traffic? Jeez! One of my sites makes several tens of thousands of dollars a year and gets almost zero traffic from Gargyl (googlebot is banned from the site for misbehaving).

SEs are just one source of traffic... and an unreliable one at that. If you've lived through algo updates from pre-Florida to multiple iterations of Panda you'll realize just how unstable even the best of sites can be in the SERP. Develop multiple sources of traffic and stop peddling nonsense about SE traffic being the only traffic that converts. In fact, SE traffic accounts for some of the lowest conversion rates on many sites.

OK, I'm new here, but a seasoned webmaster earning a living online since the last century.

Lots of misconceptions in this thread. PageRank doesn't get you better ranking. In fact, the page rank you see on the toolbar is not really your page rank at all. It's called toolbar PR and exists as FUD/misdirection (I'm not going to dig out links to make my case - go do a bit of research. Anyway, links I post may not be allowed as I'm a new user)

Then, advertisers: The ones who approach you because of your PR or Alexa rank are the ones to AVOID. They are after SEO advantage - dofollow rather than nofollow links, in-content links etc., - and by playing their game you risk screwing up your own SEO and risking the traffic you get from Google. The best advertisers are the CPA and CPM deals because they're after your users, not your SE juice.

The first 9 months or so didn't have much going on at all! 2011 has been different but I'm still a small potato compared to some of my fellow bloggers out here! As far as sustainability goes... love what you write about and write about what you love! It sounds cliche, but it is almost that simple. Being part of a great network such as this one, the advertising eventually will follow.

I second what Melissa said. It took me over two years before I got any real advertising going. I didn't really know what I was doing in terms of building my blog, building traffic, and getting exposure. I stopped and stuttered a couple of times in terms of writing and such. But, if you keep writing, you'll get noticed by Google, by readers, and by advertisers.

It's advice like that which keeps me going! I love to write, my blog is my labor of love- but I look forward to the day when it can pay for itself and more! I know that blogging brings me so many great things that money can't buy, but eventually.... ;)

I'm hoping my efforts will be noticed and feel so fortunate to be in such a supportive group such as Yakezie!

I also found recently an RSS feed in MailChimp that I set up... so every Monday, my list gets an email with the titles and beginning paragraph of each post from the previous week.

...No, I don't ask them to visit every day.

I use Mailchimp also. I would recommend giving new subscribers the option to recieve new posts as they are published. Then create an RSS feed that distributes daily.

That way you know the subscribers that are getting an RSS feed everyday actually want it and they are more likely to come back to the site more often.

After I did that my daily visitors shot up and in Google Analytics I was able to see that many were clicking straight through from the newsletter.
