I made the change to my urls to remove the .html at the end of it a few weeks ago. I had a friend update my .htaccess file with 301 rewrites to make sure any old links were redirected correctly, and also make sure most of my link juice didn't go bye bye.

So far about a month later I haven't seen any drop in my traffic - actually it's been one of my better months ever as far as traffic/income!

.html in your URL used to be a positive ranking factor because it used to mean that your pages are static and the content isn't going to change as soon as Google's crawler leaves. It made Google feel safer about displaying your page than another dynamic one.

Than naturally people got obsessed, using mod rewrite to make their urls look static.

Later on, Google came out saying that the url extension has absolutely no effect on your rankings. You could easily go ahead and name your pages /my-personal-finance-article.jon (I've actually seen people doing that probably for the fun of it).

By changing your URLs I will bet you will lose a very substantial part of your search engine traffic as soon as Google sees the changes. Then ifyou listened to the above advice about using 301 redirects, then you could get some of the lost ranking back in a couple of weeks.

I really hope it turns out well for you though ;)

Not sure if you've fixed your links yet, but I would definitely encourage you to modify your mod rewrite in htaccess file to 301 redirect your .html links to no-.html links.

A quick google search will provide you with the moderewrite rules you need to do that. That way if you happen to miss any, the htaccess rules will catch it. :)

It's an issue with the URL in the navigation bar. Compare our blog posts for example. I just cruised to your site and your blog post is http://frugalzeitgeist.com/mak.....er-change/ where as my recent post is http://www.freemoneywisdom.com.....olina.html

Notice the .html at the end of mine? Well, for SEO purposes, it's a terrible thing to have that at the end of your url's. I'm trying to figure out how to permanently remove that from my url extensions. Most blogs don't have it so I'm wondering if anyone out there has advice for me.

And yes, I'm running wordpress with my own hosted domain name.

Thanks!
