Think about it this way.  How often, when you have a question, do you go to Facebook and/or Twitter and pose it to the masses for an answer?  How often is that answer quick, and really really good?  It is the equivilent of calling up your nerdy nephew when you want to know what kind of Digital Camera of computer to buy, or when he calls you and asks you what the difference between a Roth IRA and a traditional IRA are.  We all have expertise, hobbies, and skills and Google becomes less and less useful if Facebook or Twitter allows you to get relevant quality information from people that you trust about topics that you are interested in.

That is the thing that Google fears more than anything else, and that is direction that I think that they are moving in.  And one of the reasons why Public (Toolbar) Page Rank is going away.

Not sure if you've seen the mozRank posts, but Google has actually not updated PR since last April, and they have publicly stated that one is not to rely nor focus on PR too much. It's already been removed from the webmaster tools. P.S. something else has already emerged: Check out mozRank. :)

I doubt they'd completely abandon PR.

However, if you believe this prediction has some weight to it, you might want to consider getting as many text link type ads as you're comfortable with now as opposed to later. If Google makes it so links aren't important, advertising could dry up.

You know, I agree.  I am sure there is  a ton going on behind the scenes.  The more I think about it, the less I think that Google would just let page rank die.  Whatever they decide, I hope they make it public so everyone is on the same page.
