I remove all spam comments asap. I especially hate the ones that reference something completely different from the topic I covered in the post. So far, no spam comments have made it past Akismet.

I am totally ruthless with spam - it goes straight in the bin. A lot of it is links to really horrid porn sites (as a firend pointed out, if your site is called anything to do with money, this is what you should expect to get). Apart from that I find the practice morally objectionable - it is like citing for profit in academia; done but still objectionable.

Hi AverageJoe. It sounds like you are getting comments and links confused. Those spam messages you are getting at the end of each blog post, everyone gets. I always hit the "spam" button and get rid of them. They are just spammers, usually automated, trying to get a bit of exposure on your blog. They're not giving you anything, and can make your blog look really messy and unprofessional.

Gaining links is a completely different story. Guest post, blog carnivals, link exchange etc. are the ways to obtain them. Generally speaking the more links you have, the higher you rank in the search engines, although there are also a tonne of other factors as well. Delete the spam comments. They serve no purpose. Just somebody trying to get a free link.

Sure. I got one today from a site about Wealth Affirmations. Nothing to do with my article. Nothing to do with my topic at all. I don't get it.

Several times a commenter has linked to a page that has no commentary on it at all.

What do you mean you get spammy links to your blog? Do you mean you get comments with spammy links in them? If so, definitely remove them. If not, could you clarify what you mean?

I, like you, get a bunch of spammy links to my blog. I usually hit spam (which I imagine removes them) and move on. Looking on the MoneyCrasher stats, other blogs have around a bajillion linking sites and I have about 5 (exaggerating...I don't remember the actual number, but it's much lower than most older blogs).

The other day I read a piece that said it doesn't hurt to just leave those spammy links, and can in fact help. Because I don't trust the source, I thought I'd ask my friends here. My questions are these: do you leave those links? do you remove them? Does the "spam" button remove them? Do bloggers have "linking strategies" that I'm unaware of (and therefore have a ton more links?). Or is the bajillion links just a factor of time in the biz and quality writing that makes people want to link to it?
