A caching plugin could help with that.

I've used a number of hosts including dreamhost, site5, hostgator and did free trials on few more. In my opinion, if you are just starting out either of these will be fine. But if your site ever gets slashdotted or dugg only site5 and hostgator has been able to survive those, at least for me. Nothing is agonzing than realizing that a post is popular but no one's able to see it because your site went down due to a traffic spike.

Dreamhost offers a lot, but the site is slower than both site5 and hostgator and I wasn't particularly impressed with their support (this is my experience from 3 years back, they might've improved now).

I am with Stablehost and so far I am incredibly impressed with them. Last year they ran a promotion for 75% off and not just for the first year like most hosting companies do to suck you in, FOR LIFE! Because of this huge lifetime discount I decided to sign up for the biggest shared hosting package ($7.95/mth) to make sure I had enough bandwidth going into the future. With the 75% discount, it costs me about $20 per year. I have no idea if they still have this special going on but I think they run 50% off lifetime specials from time to time as well.

Advantages of Stablehost:

- They run Litespeed servers instead of Apache, which are know to be much faster.

- They don't overload their servers at all so things never slow down.

- They have good support with good response times.

The only downsides are that they don't have unlimited bandwidth and they don't have live chat. However, 300GB/mth is more than you will probably ever need even if you run several sites and other companies only advertise unlimited bandwidth because it looks good and attracts customers. They limit you in other way (read the terms and conditions) and if you site is too taxing on their servers they will shut you down. Even without live chat, their support is responsive and helpful.

I was with Hostgator before Stablehost and was impressed with them too, especially with the live chat ... but they would have been a fair bit more expensive. Before that I was with Netfirms and it was the worst experience I've had with hosting (great for domains though) as my site would take 10 seconds to load every page with me being the only user at the time). I didn't spend a lot of time trying to work things out with them though ... I just jumped ship after that experience and reading more reviews.

I use Dreamhost for both hosting and my domain. Low prices (I pay around $11 a month, 1st domain was free). I believe The Simple Dollar is hosted with them, and I've never had any problems with that site - and its traffic is insane.

Just understand that The Simple Dollar probably has at least a VPS if not a dedicated server while most poeple here may be on a shared server. BIG difference.

I switched over my moneyandgovernment.com blog. I had a custom domain on blogspot so I had to deactivate it and switch my blog back to its .blogspot address. I had issues importing some of my files so I had to do some copy and pasting but other than that it wasn't too bad. I redirected my servers and added it to one of my Hostgator accounts and that was it. Your site doesn't have to be down for 1 minute.

I just switched over one of my blog's yesterday from Blogger to Wordpress. I use Hostgator and I love it. I even signed up for the affiliate program. I was with Godaddy before and the experience was horrible. I pay about $7 bucks a month.

Hi Mark,

Any gotchas on the switch to Word Press from Blogger?

I am making my list of to dos now to make sure I don't miss anything.

Did you have to bring your blogger site down while you setup the Word Press site? I guess I have to ask the host provider.

Thanks.

I use Dave's Network atm. If you head to RFD forums under freebies and you're a member you can get free hosting but it is limited and not recommended for larger sites. We've gotten good service from Dave's and will strongly consider using the paid hosting when the time comes where the free service isn't meeting our needs.

Hi,

My plan is to move from Blogger to Word Press in the new year and it starts with a good host provider.

WordPress recommends BlueHost (and I see a lot of affiliates)

GoDaddy apparently has had issues ...

What's the host of choice? cost? any difference being in Canada or not?

Thanks a bunch. I am trying to bite the bullet and get this done.
