Thanks for the heads up, Eric and Sam. I haven't taken Google's position on guest posts under consideration substantially enough, and it could clearly lead to troubles (to put it mildly). I'll have to do some serious reconsideration of my guest post publication policy, and review of the guest posts already posted. Thanks again (even though I'm rather behind the game, it seems).

Something to consider is that this discussion has focused primarily on the sites hosting the guest posts. What about the ones doing the guest posting? One would think that similar penalties would apply to both. Perhaps this is addressed in the video (haven't watched it yet).

Good point, and from an SEO no less!

The real issue is not whether bloggers should allow for guest posts, it's whether bloggers should allow for clearly spun content from commercial sites that are sometimes if not often times irrelevant to your main content.

The entire SEO industry is really nervous right now. 2012 did a number on SEOs who had to go back and start removing lots of their link building after their clients got punished.

It’s fascinating for bloggers to sit in the middle of this all. As a blogger, it’s pretty clear what we must do. Publish good content that is unique and network with the community. There’s nothing really more for us to do to gain search traffic over time, and SEOs know this.

Put it this way, if an SEO was so great, why wouldn’t they just have their own fantastic site that is SEO optimized that they wouldn't need to be an SEO since they'd have so much traffic on their sites?

Thanks for sharing this, Eric. Is it possible to use proxies for quality first (like the ratio of length of article to links; ration of incoming and outgoing links (which will disadvantage younger sites that may or may not be 'clean') for example) and then identify suspect and check them manually?

Keep in mind that Google will be applying an algorithmic solution, so it's hard to imagine that "quality" in the truest sense of the word will come into play. Rather, they'll be looking for signals that are correlated with "quality" -- however that is defined. It would probably be best to avoid explicitly calling things a "guest post" on the page and things like that.

Thanks for the info. It really looks like the goal is to reduce low-quality articles and unnatural linking. But, yes, definitely need to be much more stringent on accepting guest posts and the quiality of articles. Thanks Eric.

Hopefully it's clear by now from the 2012 Panda/Penguin/EMD carnage, this video, and many heads up warnings on the forums already that too many low quality guest posts from commercial sites pose a serious risk to your site's status in search. The thought process is, if you didn't learn from 2012, then buckle your seat belts for a potential world of hurt in 2013.

It's like an endless cycle where newer blogs fall for the same traps over and over again.

The low hanging fruit is easy and tasty. Just try not to eat too much of it because some are poisonous. Times have changed. Let's move on from low quality commercial guest posts and keep adapting.
