I actually just started showing up high for a couple of search terms and have monetized it by linking through to an affiliate post at the end.

Regarding being picked up by those mega sites like msm or yahoo finance are there tips for getting on their radar?

To escalate - moving beyond the numbers for the Challenge, what sort of numbers of Uniques are necessary for decent monetization?  Lets say, $1000, $2000 and $5000 per month revenue?

When it comes to CPC/CPM it's about article topics and search traffic, generally.  If you do something active (ask visitors to hire you?) you can monetize direct traffic and referrals (and subscribers), but those are generally your evangelizers - commissions and clicks and views will come mostly from search (read: Google).

Unless you get some hefty links during the challenge (MSM mentions, perhaps) it'll take you longer than the challenge to see significant search traffic.  I'm not saying I'm normal, but I didn't get what I considered significant search traffic until about a year and a half ago - and I started in 2009.  I'm sure you can move more quickly than we did, but it does take time.

My goal is to try to hit 10,000 views per month in the next three months and 30,000 by the end of the year.  We'll see how I do.

Obviously, I don't plan on relying on PPC ads for income!

All depends where the revenue is coming from.  If it is a private deal than the uniques don't matter if the other metrics are (i.e. MozRank and PR).  If you are talking adsense or affiliates you are going to need a damn good amount of uniques to hit over $1,000.  Like in the tens of thousands of search engine visitors/NON-Bloggers.  Why SE or non-blogers? b/c the fellow yakezie member isn't going to click on your adsense and/or is likely to use your affiliate links to sign up for another CC.

I've actually clicked on a couple of Adsense ads that I saw as a result of clicking through from my RSS feed.  I don't remember what site I was on, but....you're welcome!    (I clicked because I was genuinely interested in the ad.)

Evan, I had heard that PR wasn't really important these days, but is it still very relevant to such deals?  I have a 0!  My mozrank according to a free checker is 4.17, which I am looking into now.

It isn't really important these days, except to advertisers. There have been some attempts to get internet marketers to use other metrics, but others have found that it is tough to gain any traction until you get a PageRank. Your site is probably too new to have a rank yet. The next update should be any day now. On average, it is updated quarterly, but Google likes to keep people guessing.
