HostGator has been great for me. They have been able to quickly answer every question and service has been top notch. Virtually zero downtime.

$20/year sounds like a great deal. Was that with a promotion or something, or is that the normal price?

Yes, it was a promotion. They had a 75% off for life coupon as long as you selected yearly billling instead of monthly. That coupon is long gone. However, there is a 50% off for life coupon that is still active (again you need to go for yearly billing). I posted about it along with my affiliate link in one of the other threads on hosting so you can check it out there.

I'm also on their highest package. If I took their lowest package then I would only be paying about $10/year. You might be able to get away with their middle package, depending on what your future plans are. They'd probably also let you upgrade later and keep the 50% off too. You do also get a small discount off the posted rates by going yearly, which you have to do anyway to use the coupon.

One thing to keep in mind with Hostgator is they do limit your CPU usage to 20% of the server. You might be able to exceed that for a short period in a traffic burst, but if you exceed it for an extended period of time they may shut you down.

I was with Hostgator for a while and had nothing bad to say about them. I'm with Stablehost now and they are just as good as Hostgator was only I pay $20/year instead of $100+ per year.

Craig, I initially wanted to keep my domain name at ipage but when I asked them to downgrade my account to domain management only they outright cancelled my as per the cancellation email I received. So i am proceeding with the domain transfer to hostgator.

MoneySmarts, I on't think I have the traffic/revenue yet to warrant a vps. On the other hand, since HG has vps services, it will be a seamless transition as I don't have to move anything. I'll keep Mt in mind in case HG goes bust for whatever reason :)

I keep the hosting and domain name separate, just to be safe – sometimes having them at the same place can get sticky – especially if it's a free domain that came with hosting. Sometimes transfering it can be a pain. All my domains are at godaddy.com cause i find their site easy to use, and convenient. (plus i can always find coupon codes for domains)

I'm using a dedicated virtual server on Media Temple – which while it is more expensive ($30/month) than my old shared hosting account, it has been rock solid. It has gone down only a couple of times in 2+ years, and that was mainly due to my own mistakes and bad plugins.

Are you guys transfering the domain name as well when you move your blog?

I've kept my domain name at GoDaddy. It what they do, they remind you when to renew, and I like having my domain registration separate from my hosting in the event there's an issue or I move hosts.

Buck, ipage has a nice interface and quick customer support. The loading time is awful and the recent outages are unacceptable. Their tech support also repeats the same lines when u askfor more info. I am willing to pay more for a better service in return.

Time to dump these suckers....I advise not to stick around for too long!

I cut over to iPage a month and a half ago. I also noticed frequent outages , but customer support was quick to fix the problem. I may need to look around after my year is up, too. Good luck!
