I'm using WP-DBManager for daily database backups. I've also set up a Google Calendar message once a month for cpanel backups. With that I also make sure to back up my Thesis settings.

And at my new host I pay a little extra to keep the last 5 days backed up.

One day I'll be brave enough to learn about out a CRON job for backups.

Another way to manually backing up is.. FTP on to your site (i use filezilla) and copy entire webroot. I keep one on my laptop and another one in the external hard drive. Any one need a help with filezilla or ftp, email me.

Just because you copy all of your files from the FTP server doesn't mean you got your database too. You need to have copies of both.

Could not agree more on all of this... We've been using plugins for most of our db backups but it's never quite as good as the "entire" database that you can get in cpanel (or elsewhere depending on your hosting setup).. slowly getting organized to do this on a regular basis.

Through ftp you can backup the public_html folder and everything in it as well. I do this every time I make a site change or once a month which ever happens first. I usually keep 3 backups (one for each month) just in case something is messed up I can go back 3 months. I do this on top of the regular database backup.

I use a plugin that emails me a copy of my site's database twice a day. Is there something else I should be backing up?

I use the backupbuddy plugin. It loads weekly database backups and monthly everything-but-the-kitchen-sink backups to Amazon. Those backups come with a script to completely load the site on your server. It's great for migrations and backups.

Marissa, that is really unfortunate, and I'm sorry to hear this. But your right, a lot of hosts don't do daily backups, and its not easy to get things backed up sometimes.

Sustainable PF is right, there is no gaurantee that a plugin will do a proper backup for you, and I haven't had much luck with plugins either. Going into your Cpanel (if that is the host platform) is the best way to backup. If I'm not mistaken it can even be scheduled and you can have regular backups emailed to you. Do not go into phpmyadmin unless you know what are you doing ;)

Cheers
