I appreciate all of the responses and I am not trying to spam people with e-mails.  It's a one-time e-mail to visitors that comment for the first time only. I just want to send a thank you mail and if that results in one or two regulars, I'm happy with that!

I use that plugin... it just posts a little highlighted box at the top of the page that indicates you may be a new user and encourages you to sign up as an email subscriber...you can customize the message.  Based on my non-giveaway subscribers, I would say it's minimally effective...or my blog is minimally effective...lol either or.
