I have a book "More Podcast Money" and it cost about $300 to create (editor) and I have finally broken even. I sell it as a PDF for $19. It's been out for a few months. I promote it with my podcasts. If you want to get into Amazon, you need a good cover, ISBN, Library of Congress Numbers (if you want to do it right). It ends up costing you close to a grand and Amazon doesn't pay much. You pray that the volume of Amazon makes up for the low profit. This goes back to what someone previously said, writing the book is about 30% of the work, promoting the book is what is important. Check out Peggy DeKay's book http://www.peggydekay.com/ self publishing for virgins. I've read probably 5 or 6 books on writing yoru first book. This book was just awesome.

I'm really enjoying reading the responses to this topic - thanks to everyone for your informative posts! So far I've only published books traditionally, but I'm kicking around the idea of self publishing a Happy Simple Living cookbook. Also, Booklocker is another print-on-demand publisher I've heard good things about, and they offer Ebooks as well as paper books.

Well, my girlfriend just gave me the idea to publish my book as an audiobook, so I thought I'd add that to the list of ideas here for publishing options.

Apparently, according to her, many people don't have time to read and prefer to listen to audiobooks while performing other tasks.

This could be a good option for many people looking to publish their books or financial guides, and if not a stand-alone option, then as an alternative option for people looking to purchase your book otherwise.

Now, I'm not sure yet where one goes to publish an audiobook, but I've been following Jaime's post about the Eventual Millionaire Podcast, so maybe iTunes is an option for a single audiobook as well, or you could even turn your audiobook into a Podcast if you did it chapter by chapter, or something like that, which might be good for financial guides that are step-by-step, one chapter at a time.

Here's Jaime's post:

http://yakezie.com/forums/priv.....-of-itunes

Anyway, I think this would work out for my fiction pretty well, as I like to do voices also, so I could really act out the characters.

Anywho, just food for thought, figured I'd bump this post again, what the heck.

I published two books with CreateSpace and it was incredibly easy. One was a textbook that I use when I teach personal finance and the other was a biography of my grandmother for her 90th birthday. I decided to put it on CreateSpace to make it easy for family members to get a copy. What I like is that because of the affiliation with Amazon, folks can easily buy my books there. Also, because they are hard copies, I can buy a few at a discount to take to workshops or sell out of the trunk of my car if I want. ;-0

I've been thinking of going the eBook route too. I think that I can do it the same way in CreateSpace and just choose a different format or even choose multiple formats. Of course, my 'cut' will be much higher on the eBook format. I'll let you know how it goes!

Just read this article about some fiction writers who are doing really well selling books on Kindle.

http://www.novelr.com/2011/02/.....die-writer

This is more related to fiction than to publishing financial books, but a lot of them seem to be achieving success through self-promotion on their websites and Kindle, so their examples could probably apply to any type of book.

Thanks for sharing the link to your book. I downloaded a sample to Kindle and will read it when I get a chance. I'm not an expert but I think if you changed your cover and wrote a longer description you would sell more books. Check out the Kindle boards for more information. From what I've read you need to do a lot of promotion to make your book a success on Kindle. You can use your knowledge from promoting your blog and use it to promote your book.

It would be cool to have a book published by a traditional publisher but you might do better on your own. Check out J.A. Konrath's blog. He makes a ton more money publishing his own books than he did with a traditional publisher. He also writes about lots of others who are making thousands from publishing their own ebooks. That kind of success is a longshot but it is possible,.

Thank you so much for the information.

Yeah, that was a cover that Kindle actually created for me automatically, which is a nice feature if you can't otherwise do it. I guess I would need to create one in photoshop or something and then upload it, so it's something I'm going to look into further. I could probably create a more detailed description as well. I believe using the correct tags is pretty important also, so that it appears in search results for your subject matter.

I'm definitely going to check out that blog. I'm really pretty new to self-publishing, so I have a lot to learn still, and I appreciate your help.

I don't really expect to make too much money, either through traditional publishing or self-publishing, but I would like to get people to actually read my writing. It's always a plus to have actual readers when publishing.

Thank you for your help.

Hey TightFistedMiser,

I published a short fiction book, about novelette length, which is basically a collection of interrelated short stories about my grandmother's life and decent into Alzheimer's. Here's my general-use description.

GRANDMA MESSNER'S MEMORIES OF ALZHEIMER’S echoes the disconnected recollections of a family matriarch as the filters of her life are lifted, casting her on a metaphysical journey amidst several generations of her relatives as they seek to reconstruct her collective meaning.

Here's the link on Amazon. You'll notice I wrote it under a different name, long story, but that's it.

Anyway, excuse my shameless self-promotion…

Yeah, publishing on Amazon Kindle is really easy, the most difficult part for me was just getting it electronically formatted, so that it reads nicely, as you want to make sure all of your spacing and stuff is correct and easy on the eyes in the electronic medium.

It was very easy though, and you can control the pricing.

From what I've read once you have published a book on Kindle it is fairly simple to publish it on Amazon's Createspace for not too much money. My plan is to see what kind of response i get to the Kindle version and if it is good I'll publish via Createspace as well.

I've done some self-promotion in the Amazon forums and elsewhere online where possible, but it's not like I've achieved incredible sales or anything.

I agree with Aloysa in some regards, specifically from the standpoint of a fiction writer, as getting an agent or a publisher to take interest and represent you or publish your book is a great honor. I've been trying for a while, but haven't had much luck.

I had read an inspiring story about an author who published on Kindle and then through word of mouth and self-promotion ended up getting a publisher and deal for multiple books, so I decided to at least get something out there that I could show people for exposure.

I'll have to look into Createspace, as I'm not really familiar with that.

I agree with your plan though, to see how the initial response goes and then take it from there. Kindle definitely makes it easy.
