A good place to start is search.creativecommons.org.

It will bring back all photos on the web with the creative commons designation "commercial reuse with modification".

This is exactly right. (I wrote an article on finding and using photos too, if you're interested it's at http://www.kickstartablog.com/.....for-blogs/)

You would need expressed permission to use the image but that being said most photographer don't mind as long as you credit them. I would reach out to the photographer and let them know what your goal is for using their photo.

On a side note... Many people use photos without permission and nothing ever happens so the fact that you are inquiring shows you care.

I didn't realize that google had the option to select images that are labeled for reuse. I normally use flickr's advanced search for Creative Commons images. Even if it is free to use, you will still need to link back to the source of the image.

Conditions might apply." Flickr photos are indexed by Google.

In my ignorance I have just been using the photo and still giving credit. I haven't received any notifications/emails stating that I've done something wrong, but it would be nice to know what the law/rule says. :)

Thanks to a suggestion on this forum, I have begun to use Flickr Creative Commons for my photos. If a photo is there and says "All rights reserved" am I able to use it for free if I credit the photographer? What language do I look for to know that it is okay to use the photo for free? Thanks!
