I've chosen myself as the RA for one LLC and a friend (who's a lawyer) as the RA of another.

If you want the ownership of the business to remain private, you can add an RA and use a PO Box. Anybody can look up the documents your LLC has filed on the Secretary of State's website.

The one thing you need to recognize about registered agents is that they need to be reachable during business hours in order to receive "signed-for" packages. So, if you name yourself as the RA, and don't work from home then the odds are you won't be there during business hours to receive these types of packages (which include communications from the IRS and legal matters since they are often times sent via USPS signature required to verify receipt).

I'm pretty sure almost any attorney who does practices business law or does incorporations will have a RA service. Choosing one will involve making sure that they are capable of keeping you in compliance with state and federal statutes when it comes to whatever communications they receive on your behalf, and how good they are at keeping you apprised in the event of any such event. As with anything, you do get what you pay for in terms of the quality and reliability of the people you hire for certain tasks.

I'm my own registered agent. All that means is the person responsible for dealing with any official communication related to the business. My attorney said I could serve as my own (in KY anyway), which I liked since it was free. :)

I'm finally going to form an LLC. I want to set it up to be effective in 2013 and move all my online businesses over.

So I was going through the process and I found out that I need a registered agent...

Anyone have any tips on getting the right registered agent? I'm searched online and the cheapest one cost $59/year.

Who do you use?

Thanks

-Joe
