Great analysis. I am now approaching retirement in two ways - traditional funds like employer's 403b and roth ira AND passive income or a cash flow. That way if one fails, I will have a fall back plan. I expect both to be successful, at least to a certain degree, and me to live without worrying of outliving my $.

Jeremy- I like the analysis you did. It's interesting to see the different figures people come up with. You say 40k is a solid amount to have saved for retirement at age 30. Sam posted an article a few weeks ago saying you should have 127k (on the low end) in your 401(k) at age 30.

All I know is that the one complaint I've never heard someone say is, "Man, I wish I would've saved less."

Last week I did a post talking about if I was on track in saving for retirement. I put together a spreadsheet that does a sensitivity analysis on varying rates of return, performs a survivability analysis and gives a median portfolio projection.

I think it's a pretty neat little tool and was thinking about building it out some more, but wasn't sure what other information would be helpful. If you have a few minutes could you take a look? I would love your feedback on it.

How Much Should I Have Saved for Retirement By Age 30?

The link to the spreadsheet is at the bottom of the post.

Thanks!
