I don't use Google Alerts, as I find that although it's great for a free service, the alerts can take days, sometimes weeks, to come through.

I am spoilt though: I get to use the online reputation monitoring software that we have at work. While hideously expensive, it's very very quick.

That said, I also make use of the "Links to your site" function in Google Webmaster Tools (free).

Thanks for the input. Talking about not catching it, my own blog doesn't always catch internally linked posts, which can get a little frustrating. I guess when it comes to external links, GA would provide just as much info.

I have alerts for my site name and domain but not for each article, that's seems like a lot (but maybe not?).

Though using G-Alerts for a keyword you are tracking makes a lot of sense.

I have google alerts set up because I don't always get notified when other sites link to me. I like to make sure I can say thank you. I must admit though that google doesn't always catch everything either. I guess it depends on how you have it set up. It is a way to try to cover your basis though.
