Basically my suggestion is to start following a ton of people, then break them down into a variety of twitter lists by niche.   For example, i have lists for Personal finance folks, sports folks, etc.

I only follow the people that I'm interested in interacting with, but at first I tended to follow people back out of courtesy. I think it depends on your comfort level and what you want to get out of Twitter. I don't worry too much about numbers - its just a big conversation and you can join in as little or as much as you want.

A lot of people make lists to categorize the people they follow. You can go to your list instead of your full feed (which can move pretty fast!) and just read tweets from a select group of people.

I have a couple of good blogger friends whose tweets I have sent to my phone, from 8am-8pm. I'll get about 40 over the course of those 12 hours. I think Twitter is great, but it does get a little ridiculous when you follow people that post a gazillion times a day. If you're not interested in what they have to say, then you probably shouldn't follow them just so they'll follow you back.

 

For the people that will only follow you if you follow them back (if you don't they unfollow you after a few days), then they really don't care what you're tweeting about. They just want to have a lot of followers. These types of followers don't read your posts or retweet you. They care little (if anything) about what you do or say.

 

You could get a ton of followers quickly by following random people and hoping they follow you back. I guess I just want more of a loyal follower that will retweet and read what I'm putting out there.

Also, I follow only the people that I find interesting, and since the PF blogosphere is massive, that encompasses a lot of people! 

Twitter is a two way conversation, at least to me. The more the merrier - I love reading tweets and responding to them!

It seems like one of the easiest and most efficient ways to get and keep Twitter followers is to follow everyone you can and follow back everyone that follows you. However, if you do this, your Twitter news feed gets bombarded when you're following several hundred people, most of which you probably don't need to be following anyway. Do you all have multiple Twitter profiles, or do you not care about the stream of Tweets, or have another solution? Just looking for thoughts. Thanks!
