I started blogging to help track my progress towards reaching early financial independence. I needed a medium to organize and archive as well. This includes keeping tabs on things like: monthly expenses, investment income, goals, accomplishments, etc.

It's also very helpful to receive comments from other like minded individuals. Keeping the blog public and having other people follow also helps me stay motivated. So far, so good!

I started blogging when I set a goal to be a millionaire by 30 and wanted to share what I was doing. I continue to blog because I love it, I love writing, I love the community around it, I love the people I have met both online and in real life through it. Of course, the opportunities and income that have come from blogging have been fantastic and help with the desire to continue.

I started blogging when my emails to clients were multiple pages of instructions that overwhelmed them. I was stuck in a hospital room with my mom for several months and had limited time that I can physically talk on the phone. Nurses hate cell phones in an intensive care unit.

My husband suggested that I wrote out the instructions in multiple blogs that is easier for people to absorb and I wouldn't have to retype the same info over and over again. I didn't think about the public searches that blogs have unless you block the site. Suddenly we had thousands of readers in a couple of months and tons of email questions from strangers.

I turned part of the blog private with login and these are restricted to clients. The public part of the blog became my stress release as I share financial mistakes or successes that I see in my day to day work. It really helped me when I write about bad situations because then hopefully someone else out there will not make the same mistakes. There is a huge emotional stress for me when I have to tell people that they came to me too late and that there is nothing that can be done to fix their mistakes.

I blog because I want to help people. I've been doing it for years now - with slow traction - but it's not to make millions but to help. Although if I was getting enough attention to make millions I wouldn't complain. I think of it as an extension of me being a professor only here I get to talk about lots of stuff, let people know what kind of resource I can be for them, and be in front of them a few times a week. Blogging helps keep me sharp too so those that do engage me for professional services can rest easy knowing that I am constantly in on what's new and changing for businesses and for financial issues. I'd like to reiterate again that I would not be mad if my blogging started yielding a real return :)

I think I'm in with the masses here, but I originally decided to start a blog at the urging of some friends that believed I could share some financial wisdom with others throughout the world. It's certainly been a challenge but it's also been a lot of fun.

Now, that I've been at it for 8 months, I enjoy the friendships and community as well as the business aspect. My natural competitive nature makes building a business and growing a blog a lot of fun.

I'm able to lend financial advice to a handful of people each day at work. These are the ones that are proactive and contact me with questions. Blogging allows me to affect a much greater amount of people that need a financial education.

I didn't think that the community aspect would be such a positive factor when I started, but it has been a very pleasant surprise.
