I'd encourage folks to update as soon as they can, especially if the WordPress update is mainly about security updates. I've seen folks have some major issues after having their sites hacked, and a lot of times if you're not updated you'll get targeted..

I take the same approach as Smart Money. If there are problems you will hear the scream within a day. I have only once had a problem with a plugin, I have minimal plugins so I can just disable and enable them in batches to figure out which one is causing the problem. I just disable that and keep an eye on the blog/forum for that plugin. After they update, I enable it again. No plugin is worth the security risk in my opinion (esp. if the upgrade to wordpress is mainly about security patches).

It is interesting to see everyone's different views on the upgrades. Just another side note on my early adopterness, I always save my two biggest blogs (IsraelSituation.com and NarrowBridge.net) for last. I update my smaller, low traffic blogs first as a testing ground.

@KNS I worry that a savvy hacker will read about the exploits and go crazy hacking blogs that are not upgraded right away.

And I am one of those crazy early adopter/beta tester types that tries everything pre-release anyway...

I've read that you should wait 1 week before upgrading WordPress. This way, any serious bugs that didn't get picked up in the beta should be fixed (and hopefully, plugins will be upgraded). Anything over a week, and you run the risk of having a security breach.

I always upgrade right away. I had a problem with it one time ever and had to work through FTP to get it back up and running. I took about ten minutes to fix and re-run the upgrade. No loss other than a handful of visits that got a dead page.

I've had problems before, but it's always been with a plugin that wasn't compatible. I still do the upgrades when they come out though, as I'd rather lose a plugin for a week or so than end up not putting a security patch on that leaves me vulnerable.

I just moved hosting provider (It was a flawless move. 2 thumbs up to Hostgator.) and I upgraded Word Press along the way since I had to site going I wasn't afraid to upgrade. I tend to not worry about upgrading plugins but I wasn't sure about Word Press updates.

Has anyone ever had problems updating Word Press? I am just curious for future upgrades. Do you wait a few weeks to let other upgrade first?
