I had an issue where my upload location on the server didn't match my Wordpress media library location after moving servers. Might be worth taking a look to see if the plugins messed that up.

I don't know if it would help your issue or not, but I always shrink my photos before uploading them. There are plugins and such that can shrink photos for you, but I've always preferred to shrink mine first. I haven't had any issues so far.

This can also happen if there is too much load on the server and/or PHP is running out of memory - happens sometimes in shared hosting. If this is happening consistently, the issue might be something else.

The same thing happened to me.

Photos would upload into a file symbol but not crunch into the true photo.

I contacted my hosting provider and they told me that it was a problem with some sort of permission file. They told me that they would change the permissions on my site, and problem was fixed.

So.......... contact the tech support at your hosting package.
