As for the hacker... I guess I just don't get "why" they do it, but I suppose they like the challenge (sort of how we like the challenge of doing productive things like dropping our Alexa rank)?  Interesting enough, I was talking to one of our IT guys at work.  I work at the Home Office of a large company with employees in all 50 states - naturally, network security is important for us.  The IT guy said he has some hackers currently working for him on a contractor base to test some new hardware.  I thought he was joking but he said that there is actually a market for "hackers" out there and they get hired to purposely try to hack into systems to try to determine their weaknesses.  Sounds like a pretty cool job, actually!  Basically, these are previous "bad guy" hackers who have turned into "good guys" in order to profit. 

My guess is the bad hackers (who don't do it for money) simply like the thrill of destroying. Remember in the Dark Knight when Bruce's butler was saying "some men aren't after anything logical. they just want to see the world burn."

Any other Criminal Minds fans out there?  Penelope Garcia, the IT expert of the show, was caught by the FBI and given a job, she was so good.  I'm kind of guessing there's some element of truth to that even in real life.
