I just dealt with the feedburner concerns myself and detailed the steps I took to use MyBrand to own my feed url. Basically if you're not using the actual feedburner url, there isn't much risk... simply change services if doomsday ever happens, while keeping the RSS subscribers on the same custom url.

I honestly haven't even checked to see how many subscribers I have in months. I know that my feed is still working, but that's all. I am definitely more focused on building an email list, where I can directly control all aspects of my communication to them, and build relationships. It's moving slowly, but I'm glad I didn't wait.

I'm working on that as well. My email list is now ~33% of the size of my RSS list and growing much faster. That seems to be the future.

I guess if they do shut it down there will be plenty of converters that will allow you to import your subscribers list over. Our sites are small but I am sure no one will let 100K+ subscribers disappear just like that.

Ugh...that would suck. Everybody would lose all of their RSS subscriptions. I suppose the best thing to do would be to get an email list started. That way you can at least contact all of those subscribers to get them back to Wordpress RSS if needed.

Speaking of that...I should do that anyway

Yeah, I don't see it getting shut down either. Even when Google does shut down services, they do it with a huge lead time - they announced the API consolidation in mid-2011 and didn't get around to it for 18 months.

There is an rss feed in Wordpress too, if for some reason Feedburner did disappear you could just flip back to that. I don't know about the email side - someone smarter than I would have to comment (I just use the Feedburner email service).

My hunch tells me it's not going anywhere for awhile, but I could be very mistaken on that, so don't take my word for anything.

I think it drives a certain level of traffic, so much that they wouldn't turn the service off, but probably not enough that they don't see the need to continue to develop the product further. In other words, it will probably sit in limbo.

Which is fine. Does RSS have the ability to grow and develop by leaps and bounds? Probably not. The technology is probably far enough advanced that the payoff of further development simply isn't worth Google's effort.

Plus, why would they 'shut it off'? As long as sites are written in a way that Feedburner can find the content, I see no good reason to turn it off. If Feedburner does become obsolete, it's probably going to be because of a shift in web development that would somehow 'break' RSS. I don't think we're there yet.

Again, this is purely my speculation. Google could very well announce tomorrow that they plan on shutting it off. I just personally don't see it happening.

I have some suspicions that Google will eventually phase out feedburner or at least no longer support it. Since they already shut down their API, along with the feedburner social accounts, I just don't know if I want to wait for feedburner to become another one of Google's forgotten products.

Do you have any suggestions for good feedburner alternatives? Do you think they will shut down the service for good?
