The API allows third party developers to integrate Feedburner into various apps. Not the RSS feeds themselves (you'll still be able to view Feedburner feeds on third party apps) but the actual Feedburner service. Twitter has recently been walling off its API as well to limit/regulate the way people use and manipulate its data.

Man Andrea, you always know so much, lol. Thanks for explaining feedburner versus API or whatever. This helps, and my takehome message here is that I shouldn't worry about it for now! :-)

Also agree - I'm using the FB, Twitter, and Feedburner APIs to display subscriber numbers on the front page and it is wreaking havoc, haha. Still, the API is just what you call with scripts you write or plugins you download it doesn't necessarily mean the service is going away.

That's almost assuredly the case here.

A lot of the scare comes from the fact that they let the Feedburner Japan domain expire without telling anyone there.

They really have no need to keep Feedburner since it doesn't make money for them. I haven't moved my feed yet but I think we all should consider life without it should it disappear.

You should all have an RSS that is native to your wordpress site from when it was setup: site/feed

Twitter has recently been walling off its API as well to limit/regulate the way people use and manipulate its data.

Things like this happen all the time, but people are especially freaked out by Feedburner because a competitor with a paid RSS service (FeedBlitz) started spreading rumors about a Feedburner shutdown to get people to switch. I have to say it has paid off for them because people have switched in droves.

Google could announce tomorrow that they're deprecating Feedburner, but I'd be surprised if they did. They just moved it to integrate with Google accounts - before you could have a Feedburner account without tying it to your Google account, but they've changed that in their quest to integrate the whole internet. I can't see them going through all that if they plan to axe the service, but I could be wrong.

Google IS discontinuing the API, but they have said repeatedly that the Feedburner service will continue to work.

They usually give a lengthy notice before doing away with anything, so for now I'm not worried about it.

I think somebody is spreading a confused rumor. There is nothing about it in the Feedburner Status blog. One thing that Google DID recently announce is that they will be retiring AdSense for Feeds. But I haven't made so much as a penny by having ads in my feeds, so I'm not too concerned there.

I know that almost EVERYONE of us uses Feedburner for our feeds.

Is this true? If so, has anyone thought about what they'll use after it goes away?

Thanks! - Jacob
