If you're non-techie, consider Headway.

Headway can be done entirely drag & drop.   It's great for people who aren't programmers.  The learning curve isn't bad, and the tutorial videos are awesome.

Barb- Don't know if you made up your mind yet but here's my two cents.  Thesis is fantastic and does allow you to customize absolutely everything (once you know what you are doing).  I've started using it for all sites going forward.  I created the art design for Don't Do It Yourself and then paid a developer to convert it into Thesis and I love the result.   The cool thing is I can easily go in and tweak stuff in my layout which might have been a lot more difficult if I had converted the design into a custom WordPress theme.

That said, it does require some technical mojo for some changes and if you can't get what you want through their GUI options you may have to hire someone to help if you don't know CSS or PHP.  I've heard good things about Headway as Jason suggests and if you can tweak that without developers, that may be a much more cost effective option to consider.

Thesis got a LOT easier for me when I discovered the OpenHook pugin.  Combine that with the Thesis Hook Map so you know which hook does what and you can tinker away until you get what you're looking for

I am happy to help answer questions for you or give guidance (free). I would do it pretty cheap to set it up for you and get the basics going and looking nice. You can look at any of my blogs (in my signature) for what I have done.
