It doesn't happen all the time, but it's something else to be aware of!

Thanks Sunil and Tony. That is both really helpful. I may consider the Standard Theme. It will take me a long time and I have to be completely satisfied with whatever I choose before I make the switch (because I don't want to have to switch again). I will keep all of this in mind. Thanks everyone for the help.

Your plugins and widgets remain. Some themes (the ones that require code) mess things up, as you need to change everything.

That's why I highly recommend mine (Standard Theme). Everything stays the same, but everything looks a whole lot better.

i would certainly not move forward w/o backing up your databases first (these host the comments, posts, pages etc). there are several free plugins that will help you with this. once backed up, copy your customs.php and layout files on your desktop just in case. migrate and check all the components. if some are broken, you will have all the back ups you need to simply replace the existing files. there may be compatibility issues (wordpress version vs. plugin version vs. theme version) which can be ironed out by simply upgrading the relevant component in question.

Suba, I am working on a test domain, but wasn't sure the best way to move it back once I got it where I want it.

I will proceed doing what I am doing. It is going to take me a long time to figure out this new theme and set it up perfectly.

I assume then that I would just install the new theme on my main domain and import the settings for the theme from my test subdomain? (hope that makes sense)

TDD will not hide the side bar changes. Other than that it was really great. But a sure fire way is to play with the theme in a sub domain and just import all the settings. Works without a glitch all the time. Even for making a major change with your current theme you should be testing it out in a sub domain.

Unless you made manual changes to the code of your current theme, everything should carry over when you switch to a new theme - plugins, widgets, etc.

I didn't know this. Thanks for sharing since I have been wanting to play around with some themes too.

Hey All,

I am considering switching themes and starting to play around with a test subdomain. I have a couple questions that some of you may be able to answer for me (before I screw something up). Thanks for all your help.

1. Have you used the Theme Test Drive plugin? If so, any tips? Is all I need to do is install and activate it? I am worried that I will miss a setting and the changes will go live. I saw in another thread that changes to the sidebars will go live, but curious if there is anything else I need to do.

As I mentioned, I am playing around with a theme (atahualpa) on a subdomain that I set up (that is not being seen by SE). As far as I can tell, I can make the modifications there, save them and then import my settings for that theme into the other one.

2. My second question would be if I will lose anything (like widgets, plugins, etc.) when I make the switch on my site? Will I have to re-install everything and start from scratch? Or should it be relatively painless?

3. Any other themes (or than Atahualpa) I should consider (and no, I don't want to spend a lot of time learning code (at this point)?

4. Anything else I am missing and should know before making the switch?
