We do have them here! And I'm silly and didn't realize they had them outside of Pittsburgh, so thought they might be a good fit for MoneyBeagle's suggestion. Obviously wrong, but sounds like something to look into for another reason all together. I'm not really trying to be frugal on this one. Just trying to figure out how we can afford to not be. (Does that make sense? We've got a tight-ish budget [that's life] and I want to get the absolute best we can...because the one we have now is not doing well by us and I don't want to face the same problems again in a few years.)

Thanks so much for your tips everyone! ALL of them are so much appreciated!

I recently bought a twin-sized mattress from Mattress Discounters for around $300 after visiting a bunch of different stores around where I live. It's not the best one, but it worked just fine for our guest bedroom. See if they have them in your neighborhood.

My advice for mattresses, never be frugal on something you spend roughly 33% of your life on.

As someone with a bad back, I totally agree with Eric!!!

In fact, until we got a new mattress a few years ago (I almost typed "a few years back" lol), my back hurt for months. The new mattress did wonders!

I would stay away from the big box furniture stores. We were shocked at the markup.

We were lucky enough to have a source to go to. I worked at a retail store for my uncle for years as a high school and college kid. In the same plaza was a small mattress store. My uncle's store closed years ago but the mattress store is still there, for over twenty years now. Effectively the same mattresses sold at the big box store (with a slightly different model number, just like they do for TV sets or kitchen appliances) was 60% cheaper. We got our set for $750 and would have paid roughly $2,000 at a big box store.

So, bottom line, I would try to find an independent store and work with them. We were lucky enough to have a known commodity, but hopefully Yelp or Google would be able to provide you with some reviews if you're starting from scratch.

Good luck.

This is completely random, I know. But I need a new mattress so badly. And I feel like I've read posts about getting them at a much more reasonable than list price before. Unfortunately I don't remember where I saw these posts, or what their tips were. I wasn't in the market at the time, so I guess it just didn't stick.

Does anyone have any frugal mattress shopping advice????
