It can be extremely expensive for pet care if anything were to happen, don't have it myself but i know a couple of people who have it and say its worth it.

p.s. is pet insurance available for goldfish?

We have an emergency fund for the dog (and have decided that past a certain amount it would be better to put him out of his misery than risk major surgical complications), and for the kitten we have the Banfield Wellness plan. The only reason we got the kitten the wellness plan is she had to be spayed anyway so it was almost like getting the vaccinations and additional office visits for free.

We don't have pet insurance. I've priced it, and it's too expensive for the breeds that we have (French Bulldog and a Boxer mutt). We would definitely drop thousands though if anything did happen.

We don't currently have insurance for our boston terrier, but we'd considered it. We talked to my cousin, who had it for her lab, and she told me that they didn't cover her labs ear problem because apparently it was a condition that the pup was born with, even though it didn't become apparent until the dog was three.

I guess I just thought, well, if they can write stuff off as conditions that a pet was born with, most things would fall under that category, and so we just pay the vet bill when something comes up.

My cats are way too old (15 and 11) to even consider it. Even when they were younger, it seemed restrictive. I have an emergency fund to cover any big issues.

I don't have pet insurance, after deductible and with the premiums it makes more sense to me to have an amount set aside in my emergency fund to take care of these issues, might they came up.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I don't even know if Ralphie-pug would qualify since he's so old (I rescued him at 7 yrs old, he's 8 now I gather) and has had health problems before. In fact, I'm picking him up now from his vet day- got a tooth pulled and an ear infection :(

One of the sites in our blog network is Pet Insurance Comparison - I hadn't really thought much of pet insurance until I began editing the site and came to understand the pros & cons of this benefit. i have a 1 year old Black & Tan Retriever who needs to be spayed SOON... and in researching the benefits of pet insurance I think it would really be a plus. I can see the benefits of a special savings account as well.

I made a simple spreadsheet for myself where I calculated how much in premiums I was going to pay and then included deductible in it. Then I looked how much realistically I was spending on my pets a year. Insurance was so not worth it. Instead, I decided to have a separate saving account where I was putting premiums that I would have sent to the insurance company.

I don't know if pet insurance is really worth it. Doesn't it makes sense to use that money on you or your spouse? Even if you have extra money to afford pet insurance, I still won't even consider it. I'm curious to hear why some people think purchasing pet insurance is worth the money?

For regular dog maintenance I have a banefield wellness plan. For surgeries I have VPI major medical. I Plan to cancel the Major medical insurance after 48 months, because we have a dog surgery fund in place

We have a dog (boxer) that I know my wife would spend thousands of dollars to take care of in the event something happened. That being said, we haven't purchased the policy ourselves. Funny enough, I did a post on is Pet Insurance Really Woof it. Get it...."Woof" it. I thought it was funny.

I had a few people comment that said they have bought it and still think it was worth it.
