I noticed that a search that brings up my Fat Guy site, shows it in the same way. However, I noticed that it links to both pages and articles. They aren't my most popular articles, so I wonder how they made that decision.

It took me over 8 months to achieve Google Authority...I just recently received it myself. Much of it was my own fault, and I believe the tips I received from LaTisha is what got me there.

There was the Panda update last week, but that shouldn't have anything to do with this. I think this new style of site links has been around for a few months.

both can be artificially inflated. You do a lot of commenting on other blog and you will receive a lot in return. Google doesn't care about Alexa or anybody...
