I hate both! Seriously.

Benefits to HMO - Don't have to pick a doctor. Everything handled in one place. Simpler process.

Downsides to HMO - For profit company is your doctor's boss. Your service level is directly impacted.

Benefits to PPO - Pick your own doctor. Go to almost any pharmacy.

Downsides to PPO - More bureaucratic crap to get things done.

I love the freedom of a PPO - but between allergy shots and specialists, we use a fair amount of 'abnormal' coverage. You might find the fact that most HMOs are cheaper to be a bonus if you don't use a lot of medical coverage. Hopefully someone has an article laying it out in more detail, but that's what I've found.
