I quickly read through some of the comments, but I didn't think they were negative. People definitely disagreed, that's for sure, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Those links from Consumerist/Fark will continue to send traffic. Every link helps. I'm sure you got a reader or two out of it so it's a good thing.

I'd say it's good. The people who just jumped down your throat are probably not people you want to come back anyway, so yay for their hits while they last. The rest may come back over and over now, so yay for publicity. :-)

I agree! Some of the best posts for a site can be ones that spark people to comment and feel a certain way! I'd say keep up the good work!

Personally, I believe all press is good press. I believe the purpose of press is to generate buzz and traffic, and people are attracted to what they find bad ( as ironic as that may seem). It's the very reason why celebrities( who are famous for no true reason) are able to stay relevant for so long ( via sextape, getting trashed in public, and other things that normal people would be ashamed of). I believe you are on the brink of greatness. All press is good press, because it is press and people are focused on you. Keep up the good work , and see you at the top!

Thanks for the comments.

@James Fowlkes - Many of my visitors just visited the article at hand. A few clicked around a bit, but it didn't really build up my readership, so in this way it wasn't helpful. The side benefit though was that it raised my Alexa ranking and I did make a little money off my Adsense. So I guess it wasn't all bad.

@nerdwallet - thanks for your input. I know that a lot of times the people commenting feel strongly about something, and usually in a negative way so I guess I have to take the good with a lot of bad.

@Barb - Well I don't know if I'd say I'm important in the blogosphere, but thanks for the support! My traffic has stablized now and it is quite a bit higher than before the spike in traffic so I guess this is a beneficial side effect.

This past week, a guest post I hosted from gobankingrates.com ended up on some big sites like consumerist.com and fark.com. My traffic went through the roof, however most of the comments I received were REALLY negative.

So the question is, is this bad for my blog? Or is any traffic good?

Here is the post that received almost 30,000 views this past week:

http://www.littlehouseintheval.....a-bad-idea

What do you think?

Jennifer, I am convinced that when you start getting negative comments, you have made it!! I know it hurts, but..... I take it as a sign that YOU ARE IMPORTANT in the blogoshphere! Congrats!

In my experience, the average commenter on blogs and news sites is a moron. The bigger the site is, the more comments it will get, and the more negative they will be. People like to use the internet to vent all the negative things they would never say in public. I had a blog post end up on Yahoo finance, and the majority of comments were about how we should never take financial advice from a "Chinaman."

You'll notice that sites that forbid anonymous commenting tend to have much better dialogue, and less flaming. So don't take it to heart.

Traffic is only as good as what it gets you. What is your goal? RSS subscribers, email subscribers, paying customers(conversions). Whatever your goal is, see if the traffic affected it positively. If not, make sure yoru front page is setup to encourage people visiting your site to actually to DO what you want. Traffic that just looks at one page and leaves is of absolutely no use to you. That's my 34 cents anyway...

Absolutely, it's good! No question about that!

If they're coming over in droves -- even to tell you that they disagree with you -- then at least they're coming over, right?

As for negativity of comments, the bigger the site, the bigger the audience that all of the commenters have for their particular soapbox. Yahoo! is huge. Consumerist isn't that far behind. "Wow, lots of people will be nodding their heads and agreeing with me as I tell this person off (anonymously)!" Trolls and naysayers don't visit sites without traffic. It'd be like talking to yourself in a small room.

It is all good publicity. Some sites just have overwhelmingly negative commenters. I've had a couple posts make it to Yahoo News and they had lots of negative comments. I felt kinda bad about it until I looked at the comments on other Yahoo News posts and noted that they are almost always negative. I wouldn't worry about the negative comments at all.
