I try to blog with passion for most of my articles.

timely post are fun because they give you a traffic pike (when they are well executed) but the effect loses steam pretty fast. For example, I have written an article on National Bank raising its dividend the very second I knew about it. I got a traffic pike that day, a few more click on adsense but that's it. The next morning, the "extra" visits were gone already...

I always write what I am passionate about, interested in or just having fun writing about. First and foremost I write for myself because I have to write. Thoughts and ideas are crowding my head and I just have to get them out on a paper. I write for the love of writing.

So, my question to you - why do you write? Answer this and it might give you an idea how to handle passion vs popular posts.

Honestly, I love writing, too. So many thoughts in my head, writing helps me convey my message way better than speaking, most of the times. I also use it as a tool to deal with issues, share ideas, express myself, and improve as a human being. The tricky part, I like to write passion topics, but I am also passionate about improving my blog. Catch 22, passion topic or a lukewarm topic that will help me with my passion project, my blog with traffic, branding, monetizing, etc.

Passion for sure. Keep in mind that time-sensitive posts can pay big dividends for years to come as linkjuice is for eternity, even if you get no direct search engine benefit from that 1 post in particular.

I just posted a blog post on a timely subject related to my blog, but I tried to go above and beyond the newsy side and look into the strategy of the event/happening, not just what happened. If nothing else, it's one more page on a blog.

I almost never write about current events, so most of the time I would definitely side with passion. However, if there was a fantastic new way to save money that just launched and it also had an accompanying affiliate program then it would be bumped up a few notches in my writing priority.

I prefer the long and steady road to traffic and readers through quality content more than always looking for the next big flash in the pan.

Hey all,

How do you grapple with this situation? You are itching to post, but it might not be very popular, or do you cobble something together because it popular and timely? This is just an example. You are super excited about a new savings tip at the laundry (I am making this up) and could write a very passionate post. It will probably be easy and fun to read because you are just so psyched about it. Or you have some thoughts on the New York Carmelo Anthony trade, it's timely and popular, but you aren't that big of a basketball fan and not as jazzed about it as your laundry tip.

Which would you write about and why? Would love to hear your thoughts.
