Hey guys,

Working on a blog title, A vs. B.  Google search has one with 1,030,000 items while another one has 1,300,000.  For better results, do you choose the first one or the second way?

Need more info to make an accurate assessment.  You need to factor in number of searches that each title gets (use the free Google Keyword tool) and the strength of the competition to really know which one will be more worthwhile.  For competition you need to look at the sites currently ranked and compare their pagerank, #of backlinks pointing to each of them, and other SEO factors to determine how much work it will take to outrank them.

Thanks Mike, great points.  Specifically I am looking at doing a series called Stocks vs. ETFs or ETFs vs. Stocks.  Wanted to see which one would be better for me SEOwise.

Hey Buck,

ok, I searched for both of these terms using the Google Keyword tool and the both get very low searches (see image attached below).  They also have pretty low AdSense payouts so it really wouldn't make a difference which you would choose.

What I did next was check out the competition using Market Samurai (aff link) and they look largely the same.  Most of the already ranked sites are actually the same, although not in the exact same order.  Either way, there are a few that look like easy targets so you should be able to rank for either of (or both) of those terms if you just build a few links to it.

I don't think we can attach excel files, so I placed a link to the Market Samurai data that I exported so you can see the top 10 ranking date for those 2 terms…you can download it here…

i totall second Mike's point. search results is just one piece of the equation – one needs to find out what the search demand is (number of searches).  the best ratio of supply/demand is what I'd go with…

For Google Adwords tool I believe that competition indicates how many advertisers are bidding for that keyword, so higher would be better, and you also need to look at everything else he mentioned here. Still, write for the users in the end — does this title look good? Optimizing for SE should come afterwards.

I agree with Mike. That's not enough to go on. How competitive is the title?
