Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Adsense recommend putting ads above the fold ?

Tushar, you are right, but the Google division that determine where sites rank is different from the division that deals with advertising, and they don't always see eye to eye, especially on these sort of issues.  :(

I really hope that their algorithm will be able to tell the difference between ads and other "non-content" material. If not, then site will get punished for what comes down to a simple design choice. Some sites have widgets, banners, subscribe buttons and other items that are not ads, but are not content either. I hope those things are ignored by this new algorithm.

I agree. I have some videos and other code above the fold, so I'm hoping it's not an issue. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Could this be the reason that I went to 900 Views on Thursday to less than 400 on Friday then 250 on Saturday and then back up to a normal Sunday today?  Are they testing my site out?

You'd have to dig deeper and see what articles are being visited and from where. Could be anything from social media to something in the news to algo changes to anything else causing it.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Adsense recommend putting ads above the fold ?

Yes, but they don't suggest blocking out all content in lieu of ads.  The intention is to create a better reader experience.  An ad above the fold, per se, wouldn't be bad but some have their ads set up in such a way that you don't even see the article until you start scrolling down some.

Thanks for the info and the great explanation.  How often does Google change this?

Google is constantly changing their algorithm. They've stated that this is only one of the 500 changes they have made over the last year.

As a general rule, anything Google announces is a much bigger deal than the other 500 algorithmic changes you don't hear about.  I would imagine that most algorithmic changes are to deliver better results for very small subsets of the search queries going into the site – locations, certain products, and the algorithm's understanding of semantics, for example.
